How to Get a Real Estate License in Ohio

If you’re considering a career in real estate, it starts with getting your real estate license. In Ohio, there are several requirements before this can happen, including being at least 18 with a high school diploma or the GED equivalent. Complete Ohio Real Estate License Requirements

Getting a real estate license in Ohio has several stated requirements. These include that you must:

  • Be at least 18 and have a high school diploma or a GED.
  • Be a United States citizen or legal resident.
  • Be honest and truthful.
  • Not have committed any disqualifying offenses, including sexual offenses or violent offenses.
  • Not have convictions relating to local, state, or federal real estate laws.
  • Be sponsored by an Ohio broker.
  • Complete 120 hours of pre-licensure courses.
  • Apply to take the Ohio real estate salesperson exam.
  • Pass the Ohio real estate salesperson exam.

Get a Sponsor

To complete the pre-licensure courses, you must have a sponsor per Ohio requirements. To get a sponsor, write out a list of real estate brokers in your area and see if they are willing to sponsor you. Your broker’s job is to help you become a successful real estate agent. They will provide on-the-job training in exchange for a portion of your commission. Most brokers will happily sponsor you because it allows them to grow their practice and earn more money. Ask about:

  • The kind of training and support they offer.
  • How the commission will be split (50/50, 70/30, etc).
  • When and if they will provide you with leads.

Complete Ohio Real Estate Coursework

One of the prerequisites for becoming a real estate agent is completing 120 hours of coursework from an accredited school. After completing the pre-licensure classes, you must take the Ohio Real Estate Salesperson Exam. You must submit an application fee and complete a criminal records check to schedule the exam. Then, you need to pass it with at least a 70.
