Steps to Overcome Test Anxiety

1. Learn how you study most efficiently.

There are many ways for people to study, and different methods may be more efficient for different people. We suggest researching different study methods and test-taking strategies to learn what works best for you. You may prefer to study by using physical flashcards, re-writing notes, taking practice exams, or a variety of other methods. Through this practice, you can also learn what type of study environment works best for you.

2. Study early, often, and in similar environments.

You may work best at home, in a library, a coffee shop, or in another type of environment. Whatever atmosphere works for you, make sure you stay consistent. Consistency is going to help you focus better and the information will be easier to recall when it comes time to take your test. Additionally, begin studying early. The earlier and more often you study, the less stressful the process will be, helping you succeed when test time arrives.

3. Establish a pre-test routine.

Whether it involves a big breakfast, a cup of coffee, music, a walk, or any other aspects, be sure to establish a routine for the morning of your test that will set you up for success. This routine will ease your stress level and ensure that you are well-prepared for your exam. No matter what your routine entails, follow the same steps each time.

4. Take care of yourself leading up to your test.

Personal and mental well-being is so crucial when it comes to academic success and overcoming test anxiety. Be sure to eat nutritious food and drink a lot of water to stay hydrated. Staying active as well, whether you enjoy an intense workout or a walk through your neighborhood, can help you overcome test anxiety. Activity will help your body relax, destress, and rest easier in the days leading up to your exam. Sleep can be directly correlated to academic performance, and adults need good rest for optimal test and work performance.
